Tummy tuck techniques
Standard or full tummy, extended tummy tuck, fleur-de-list tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck
Extended tummy removes more skin and fat than standard so, it’s preferred after a massive weight loss
Fleur-de-list can correct the most amount of correction yet it causes more visible scars.
The mini tummy tuck can be used for only a small number of patients as it carries the least correction
The main difference between them is where the incisions are placed
At your first visit to the doctor, you will discuss the appropriate technique regarding your case and your goal.
What is a tummy tuck?
It is a cosmetic procedure (also known as abdominoplasty) that aims to give you the perfect abdominal structure by removing excess fat, skin and tightening abdominal wall muscles
a tummy tuck also may rebuild muscles that have become weakened or separated due to pregnancy or trauma.
It can be appropriate for women who have had many pregnancies or anyone who has lost a lot of weight.
It’s not a quick fix for losing weight as the procedure is usually only recommended for people with a healthy body mass index (BMI).
Before the tummy tuck surgery
First of all, you should have enough sleep and rest well the day before the surgery
No food for 12 hours prior to the procedure
If you are sunbathing or tanning, you should put that on pause so that you don’t irritate the skin
You will undergo blood workup and medical evaluation with a close focus on cardiovascular and pulmonary status
You may have to stop some of your medications, for example, those which can increase bleeding such as blood thinners and NSAIDs (Aspirin) for 2 weeks before the surgery
You also have to stop vitamins like vitamin C and vitamin E for 4 weeks before the surgery
it’s very important to cut smoking before and after the surgery as well as cutting alcohol for at least 48 hours before the surgery
Steps inside the surgery
Your surgeon will mark your abdomen to indicate the location of the incisions, the center of your torso and the location of the repositioned navel
Medications are administered for your comfort during surgical procedures. The choices include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.
Then the surgeon will make the incisions which will be placed depending on the used technique
the surgeon will remove excess fat by liposuction or other methods. Your abdominal skin is then stretched down over your incision line and the excess skin is removed.
The muscles will be pulled closer together and stitched into a position to provide them with a more toned look. Abdominal muscle tightening will make the waistline appear narrower.
The surgeon may detach the original navel and place it in a more youthful location. Sometimes the old navel may not be reattached, but a new navel may be artificially sculpted
Finally, he will use tissue glue, sutures or staples to close the incisions.
